Step outside your Marthas Vineyard rental house and enjoy all the wonderful arts and entertainment on the island. I’m not just talking about going to the movies either. Well actually…if you’re really into movies you can check out the Film Society, which has year-round screenings of older classics, newer independents, foreign language films, and documentaries. It’ll be hard to pass that up for any movie buff.

The Chamber Music Society hosts a twelve concert series every summer. But this is no rock concert series. If you enjoy the sounds of Bach and Beethoven, this is a must for your list. The Performing Arts Center is centrally located and can fit nearly 800 people, so check out their calendar to see what fantastic work they are doing next. Then take in a play at the Vineyard Playhouse run by a small non-profit organization.

And, this is just the tip of the iceberg. You can visit the Marthas Vineyard Chamber of Commerce to learn about all the wonderful musical and theatrical performances offered all summer long.  Sometimes it’s good to take in a little culture on Marthas Vineyard vacations.

The Obamas Love Marthas Vineyard Vacations

This summer the Obamas are planning a return trip to Marthas Vineyard, their favorite summer vacation spot. This will be the family’s third straight summer going to a Marthas Vineyard rental home. They will be spending 7-10 days on the island in mid to late August. Naturally the Secret Service and other staff members will be accompanying them on the trip. The family is staying at the Blue Heron Farm in Chilmark, a 28-acre estate the Obamas used the previous two times.

The giant estate includes a basketball court, pool, and boat house. It also overlooks Tisbury Great Pond. The family has grown attached to the island’s beauty, beaches, and, of course, food. There’s nothing quite like the taste of fresh seafood. Marthas Vinyard also marks a place where the Obamas went before the Presidency; it’s a comfort zone. Previously, President Obama spent much of his vacation on the farm, but did venture out for a few rounds of golf, along with family outings for ice cream and shopping.

If Marthas Vineyard is good enough for the President of the United States, it’s definitely good enough for you! Look for Massachusetts homes for rent today and enjoy all that the island has to offer.

The vacation is simply jammed packed with activities. But when you plan too much, the vacation gets tiring fairly quickly and soon you will want a vacation from your vacation! That’s why you need a few “lazy days” to unwind and relax. Besides soaking up the sun on the beach, plan a day of shopping.

Shopping can be tiring too, so don’t overdo it. On Martha’s Vineyard you can find wonderful stores to explore. There are antique dealers and art galleries for the cultured minds. Book lovers will want to visit Book Den East or Edgartown Books and remember what it’s like to shop in small stores as opposed to chain bookstores. The location is just so beautiful and it’s a great getaway from your home town. In the summer, you can get married right on the beach and enjoy the scenery. Horses Fly on Martha’s Vineyard

marthas vineyard rental homeOkay, maybe literal horses don’t fly here, but did you know that Martha’s Vineyard is home to the oldest operating carousel in the entire country? The Flying Horses Carousel also represents the birth of tourism for Marthas Vineyard vacations. Everyone was eager to flock to the island to take a ride on this infamous carousel. The carousel was originally  built for New York’s Coney Island in 1876. For whatever reason, it was moved to Martha’s Vineyard in 1884. Five years later it was actually moved again, but just a few hundred feet down the road where it remains today.

The original carousel used real horse hair for the manes and tales and had oxide eyes which contain a tiny hand-carved animal. Both these traditions are still in place for the updated horses. But what makes these horses so special is that they can actually fly! No, just kidding. But unlike traditional carousels, these horses do not move up and down.

In order to prevent the carousel from moving again, it was obtained by the Martha’s Vineyard Preservation Trust in 1986. So there is no rush to see it because it isn’t going anywhere. But do make sure you pay homage and take a spin when you leave your Marthas Vineyard rental home.

Complete Your Massachusetts Vacation at Chappaquiddick

marthas vineyard rental homeChappa-what? Chappaquiddick! Say that five times fast. So who or what is Chappaquiddick and what does it have to do with my Massachusetts vacation? It has everything to do with your trip. Chappaquiddick Island is a small island off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard and is part of the town of Edgartown. Sadly, this tiny island became famous after an accident involving Senator Edward M. Kennedy in 1969. The senator accidentally drove his car off the bridge. But that’s not why you should visit the island!

It used to be connected to Martha’s Vineyard by a narrow strip of beach, but after a storm, there was a breach in the strip. The island has become a great getaway from the “main” island. There are beautiful beaches to visit and it’s a wonderful place for bike riding and kayaking. You can also take delightful guided tours around the island as well. This can be the perfect spot to get in some fishing and perhaps do some grilling on the beaches after you catch some fish.

After taking in the beautiful scenery of Martha’s Vineyard, don’t forget to pay a visit to Chappaquiddick. It’s nearly impossible to forget that name so include it on your list of things to do during the Marthas Vineyard vacation.

You want to stay practically the entire summer. So it only makes sense that you would rent a house from someone. Staying the entire summer in a hotel will eat up your entire savings account. However, when staying in someone else’s home, there are some “unspoken” rules of etiquette to follow.

First of all, this isn’t your home and this isn’t a motel that a maid will clean up. Treat the house as you would your own. Well, maybe that’s a bad idea for some. Treat the home with care. Don’t go throwing wild parties and breaking expensive vases. Always clean up after yourself and scrub that house well before leaving. Leave the home in the same condition as when you first arrived. Be kind to the neighbors. When the owners come back, they don’t want to find out unpleasant information about you. Some humans tend to be as curious as a cat, but don’t go snooping through the Marthas Vineyard rental house.
